Helpful Hints
In no particular order. Not all hints will apply to everyone.
- If you are going to take them food, please deliver it in a disposable pan. This way they do not have to remember which dish goes to which person
- Food gift cards are awesome
- Remember to reach out on special dates (anniversary, birthdays, mothers day, Valentines day etc)
- Don’t ask if they need anything from the store. Be more specific (Do you need paper towels or toilet paper? Do you need dog food?)
- Don’t ask too many personal questions (Are you going to keep that big house just for you?)
- Don’t try to fix them
- Listen. Really listen. Be a safe place.
- If you don’t know what to say, it is OK to say “I don’t know what to say”
- Be patient
- Don’t compare their loss to yours. Everyone’s grief is unique
